Skating: Depending on his/her level of skating ability, (we have coaches that can help evaluate for you), kids of all ages can take a Learn to Skate program from the Hampton Roads Iceplex. See http://hriceplex.com/ under “Programs.” They can teach your child the necessary skill sets to skate proficiently and progress to the next level which is Learn To Play hockey.
Learn to Play Hockey: PYHA offers an instructional Learn to Play Hockey program for beginning hockey players. While most players are in the Mite age group (4-8 years old), there are players as old as 14 who have participated in the Learn to Play Hockey program. Many of the players have previously participated in the Learn to Skate program (above), but some enter the Learn to Play Hockey program directly, based on previous skating experience outside the PYHA programs. You can sign your skater up for Learn to Play, an ongoing 6 to 8 week program (see schedule, Learn to Play Tab on left). The child learns all the fundamental skills (passing, shooting, and specific skating) needed to join a team at their age level.
Timing: Your child is welcome to join Learn to Play at any time during the sessions for a prorated price. Coaches are evaluating throughout each session and based on each child's development, they will notify the director of hockey programming that the player is ready to move on to an age appropriate team in the PYHA house hockey program.
USA Hockey: All PYHA programs are sanctioned and insured by USA Hockey, the national governing body dedicated to teaching youth the skills, sportsmanship, and self-confidence necessary to play the most challenging and coordinated sport there is. It’s necessary to first register your player at USA Hockey, https://www.usahockeyregistration.com/login_input.action before they can skate at Learn to Play. The annual fee is $30, (children under 6 are free). Click on “Register Now,” then “I’m currently 18 or older,” then “Ice Player/Coach,” and “Child (Under 18),” then fill out your child’s information.
